Diego Godín has revealed in Uruguayan news paper El País that he is ready for a step up, hinting at a move to Atlético.

“I’m ready to move ahead. Villarreal is a great club and was for me the ideal team to adapt to Spanish football.

“Now I’d like to join a team with more history, that always aspires to fight for a title.

“All this [transfer talk] makes me happy, because it shows I’m on the right way and I hope to continue like this.”

We reported earlier that Godín might move to Atlético for €9m. Villarreal’s director José Manuel Llanezo acknowledged that a move for the defender is likely.

“The transfer is an important subject regarding our transfer budget. We’re close to a deal after our meeting with Atlético [on Thursday].

“We can say an agreement is close, because the differences between the clubs are minimal.”

I see villareal have just signed Marchena – surely Godin’s replacement?

That’s what the media have been speculating, I’d imagine it would only be a matter of time before Godín moves to Madrid now Marchena is sealed, especially with the €18m figure being touted around the newspapers.
