Quique Sánchez Flores this morning gave an interview to the assorted sports media from the team’s base in Thailand. A full transcript of the interview can be found on AS.
The most interesting answer our coach gave was certainly the one regarding Diego Costa’s future:
“The staff likes him. We’re trying to do everything possible to make sure he stays. Last season we were limited by our choices with only Agüero, Forlán and Jurado available, but we need a fourth forward.”
No mention of Ibrahima or Salvio there. A couple of weeks ago there was speculation in the Spanish press that Quique might not be too keen on Costa, as the forward – in typical Brazilian style – arrived overweight in Madrid.
I was delighted to read Quique’s words, because I have been in favour of Diego Costa returning to Atlético since last summer. The Brazilian had an impressive season at Valladolid and will offers us something different up top. And right now he is twice the player Ibra is.
Sánchez Flores also commented on our objectives this season:
“In the league we know where we want to be; in the top four. Last season we reached to two finals, but we know that happens only every once in a while. The most important thing is that the team has recovered, is able to compete, and the fans are behind us.”
When asked about possible arrivals and departures in our defence, Quique tried to duck the question:
“There has been much talk regarding Atlético’s defence. But I cannot comment on possible departures as long as we’re unsure if someone is going to arrive or not.”
