Elias Mendes Trindade looked back on his short period at Atlético in an interview with Portuguese paper A Bola.
The midfielder stayed in Madrid for only eight months after poor planning by our club directors and holds no warm memories of his old club.
“Sporting is a superior club to Atlético.”
“Atlético was a negative experience for me. They had me play out of position and there were problems off the pitch.”
Elias arrived in Madrid in January of 2011, after Atleti splashed out €7m for the Corinthians man.
But as only three extracomunitarian players are allowed in Spain, the Brazilian international was let go ahead of the new season.
“They brought me to Europe, only to tell me they didn’t count on me.”
In August, Sporting CP bought the 26-year old for €8.8m. In Lisbon he seems to feel more appreciated.
“Here things are structured. Salaries are paid in time and people around the club will do everything to make the players feel at home.”
Elias is an undisputed starter in Portugal and is challenging for the league title with his new club. We could possibly face him if both Atleti and Sporting advance past the next two rounds of the Europa League.
How do you feel about Elias’ departure, is he right to feel hard done by? Could Atleti use him now that the centre of our midfield still seems far from convincing?
