OFFICIAL: Atlético dismiss Manzano

Goyo's second stint with the los Rojiblancos comes to an end after only 6 months

Griezmann signed one year contract renewal on Tuesday

Atlético’s official site confirmed Thursday evening that manager Gregorio Manzano has been fired.

According to the club’s official statement, Atleti’s Executive Board reached the decision to dismiss the heavily-under-fire coach in a meeting held Thursday afternoon.

“This decision has already been communicated to the manager, with whom we have reached an agreement to terminate his contract,” the statement read.

“Club Atlético de Madrid thanks Gregorio Manzano for the job performed and wishes him the best for the future.

“The club will now focus on hiring a manager to direct the first team,” concluded the statement.

    Thank god thats done.
Good luck Goyo. He looks like a good man, but this was not the job for him. This was another disastrous decision by our directors and by Caminero.
I dont think Simeone is the right man either. I thinks its Luis or Benitez that can pull us out of this, but both of them will clash with the owners so they will probably not be the ones.

  • Veiko

Simeone is another bet. We dont know what we get, again .

Aragones would be superb, Benitez though is not one of my favorites.

Sadly this needed to be done.

I don’t know what kind of coach Simeone is, but perhaps he’ll connect well with the players, also because he’s relatively young and because he was a player himself not too long ago.
But I haven’t a clue about his tactics, so hopefully he can surprise me in a positive way.
Perhaps he knows how to let the midfielders use their intelligence, let them work together the way they should.
You’d think that players like Koke, Gabi, Diego and even Mario and Tiago know how to play as midfielders by now.

With the team available, I think they should still go for possession football, but for that to be successful, the midfield needs to play way better, now it’s just hoping Diego and Arda can be heroes of the day.
With good midfield-play, others will be able to shine as well, Falcao would score more goals and so would Adrian and Salvio. I’m sure of it.

So, (probably) Simeone, make this team work, please!

I think Diego Simeone is the best choice for Atleti. He is a good strategist, conservative but his style his effective. While it may be debatable if he has little experience or not, he does has plenty of experience in my opinion, he coached Estudiantes and made them champions for the first time in 23 years, he also made River Plate champions, and in his first spell managing a team in Europe with Catania, he saved them from relegation and made sit on a comfortable position in the table, and right know, I think Atleti’s main goal for this season is gonna be to avoid the relegation positions because of the poor level displayed so far, and I hope Simeone is gonna get good results for us.

According to, Cerezo confirms an offer to Simeone which only requires minor details to be worked out. Also, he had no comment on caminero’s continuity.
Whoever our coach will be, I want to see our lethal fast counterattacks return, like in the Kun-Forlan days.

  • Javi Lozoya

Rafa Benitez would be a good option but he knows the hostile environment that managing Atletico represents, he is gonna be told what to do and what not, and so that’s probably why he isn’t coming.
Also, I think Benitez would’t work at Atleti quite good because he needs stability, like when he went to Inter, Inter didn’t played that bad but they didn’t get good results, Benitez changed Inter’s Catenaccio style for a attractive attacking football style, and that did turn out so good because most Italian teams and specially Inter are used and designed to play Catenaccio,.
Benitez’s sacking from Inter could be related and compared to Manzano’s spell with Atleti, he changed Atleti’s conservative style for ball possesion, and it didn’t worked, and so, I thinks Simeone’s style fits perfectly for Atleti, good solid defending and counterattacking, that’s gonna get us good results because we need them right away.

  • Javi Lozoya

Remember “Mono” Burgos?, he is gonna be Simeone’s assistant, and I think that’s probably good for the team, “Mono” Burgos is another Atletico former player and knows the club very well, and after he retired, he worked as as musician!, and also as a journalist for some Madrid sports programs, so he sort of has been keeping in contact with Atleti and Spanish football, and that’s should turn out for the club, having two former Atletico Madrid players that represented the club quite good and that have been in touch with the team after their retirement from football, it must turn out good wouldn’t it?.

  • Javi Lozoya

I hope Simeone brings a defensive or center midfielder with him, there are some very interesting players in those positions like; Patricio Toranzo, Claudio Yacob, and promising Bruno Zuculini, all from Simeone’s former club Racing, and they wouldn’t be very expensive at all, the only problem would be the non-EU thing but I’m sure the club can work on a solution for it.

  • Ian

So, if I’m not mistaken, the club will be looking for a MANAGER not a coach right?
If that’s what I think it is, then things should be better because there’ll be more freedom for the manager to manage the team right?

  • Davide

Right now i think Simeone is a good choice. Our season is already more or less screwed. I do not expect fireworks,<we just need a coach to take the team to the end of the season with the little diginity we have left.

Hopefully he will do well and stay for awhile. Simeones knowledge of the player base in Argentina in invaluable. I wouldn't mind seeing some exiting youngters transfered to Atleti B or even first team from Argentina.

Many of them has Italian passports.

  • Javi Lozoya

Pitarch is coming and so Caminero is leaving the club.

  • Arjit

Please no benitez, did none of you pay attention to his later years in liverpool? also his disaster at inter? He turned a treble winning team into a mid-table team. If it wasn’t for leonardo, inter wouldn’t even have qualified to champions league the follwing season!

  • Javi Lozoya

Don’t worry Arjit, Benitez isn’t coming, former Atleti legend “Cholo” Simeone is.

  • Jose Ignacio Perez-Laorga

Too late, he should have left months ago, 2 months gone to waste because the board wanted to save money and trouble
    what a shame..
