According to El Mundo, Diego Simeone is currently on his way to Madrid.
The Spanish paper claims the Argentine coach will be presented as new Atlético manager on Friday or Monday.
Simeone will bring former Atleti goalkeeper ‘Mono’ Burgos with him, who will reportedly be appointed as his assistant.
On Monday we reported that Simeone had quit his post at Racing.
This immediately triggered rumours that he was in line to take over for Gregorio Manzano, who will be sacked after Atlético’s Copa del Rey game against Albacete, reports El Mundo.
It’s unclear whether Simeone would be able to work with José Luis Caminero. The latter is said to have had a relationship with El Cholo’s wife, which obviously would make for a lot of drama at the Manzanares river.
Perhaps a solution would be to replace the sporting director, who only started last June when he assumed the role previously held by Jesús García Pítarch. Coincidentally, Suso was spotted at the Vicente Calderón in the morning, although he told reporters he only stopped by to wish his former colleagues a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
As always, Enrique Cerezo did his best not to deny any wild stories. On Argentine radio station Deportivo Télam, he was quoted as saying:
“I have a good relationship with him and we talk a lot. Simeone will be coach of Atlético [at one point]”, said the president.
What do you think? Is a deal inevitable and is Simeone the short term solution we need?
