A day after the 4-1 thumping at the Santiago Bernabeú, Atlético B had the opportunity to avenge the first team’s loss.
But the young Rojiblancos fell to their big rivals in typical Atleti fashion. Despite playing against 10 men and winning a penalty, the B-team lost 1-0 through a late goal by Joselu.
Castilla are at the top of the standings but faced the highest scoring team in the league and during the first half hour of the match Atleti dominated the fixture.
The biggest opportunity was for Kader after a spectacular run by Pedro, but the Frenchman’s shot whistled past the post. Earlier on a shot by Kader was stopped by goalkeeper Jesús.
Shortly before the break the visitors had an incredible chance to open the scoring, but Joselu headed wide from close range.
After the break Atleti continued to have most of the ball, with an excellent Sergio Marcos taking the reigns in midfield. The team were helped by Real Madrid winger Lucas Vázquez, who received his second booking of the day in the 71st minute.
At that point the team already should have been ahead, but Atlético wasted the chance to take the lead from a penalty kick. Set piece specialist Fer saw his shot stopped by Real’s saviour, Jesús.
At the other end Real Madrid made us pay for our miss. Shortly before the end, Jesé Rodríguez escaped the offside trap and skipped past two defenders before pulling the ball back to Joselu. The former Celta striker slotted the ball into the back of the net to decide the match.
