I was really looking forward to seeing Keko, as captain, lift the trophy as European Champions with the Spain U19s, but sadly they lost the final today. The host nation France proved too strong, and after initially going behind, came back to win 2-1.
Spain, with Keko and Pulido as starters, had dominated against all opposition throughout the tournament, and were the superior team in the first half tonight. Real Madrid striker Rodrigo opened the scoring after a great assist from Daniel Pacheco, the Liverpool youngster.
But the French U19s showed a lot of character in the second half and disrupted the Spanish play. Shortly after the break they equalized through Gilles Sunu and five minutes before the end, they headed in the winning goal.
Keko, the captain of Spain U19, started every game throughout the entire tournament. Pulido started all but one, when Spain had already qualified for the semi final. Koke, who is from a younger generation, twice came on as a substitute and started one match. They had a great tournament, let’s hope some of them will go on to represent the senior Spanish side while they’re still playing for Atleti.
The trio will join Quique Sánchez Flores’ first team on Tuesday, when the selection returns from the trip to Thailand.
